WHEN TAMAL had said boat, I wasn't sure what I imagined but the huge fucking catamaran tied up to the jetty was not it. I gawked at the ship with the guy stood aboard decked out in full white uniform, and then back to Tamal.

He gave me a lazy one-shouldered shrug. "It belongs to the hotel. They let me borrow it."

I clamped my lips together but couldn't stop my eyebrows from lifting. Why would the hotel let Tamal borrow a floating mansion to take me out? I opened my mouth to ask him, but he stepped on board and greeted the…captain? He held his hand out for me, and I jumped on board.

A flurry of activity followed, and then we were heading out to sea, and I forgot my questions as I lay on the netting beside Tamal and watched the spray of the sea beneath us. The sun was shining but not too hot, and all I could see for miles was the clear cerulean water. The smell of salt water and Tamal filled my senses, and suspended over the ocean, I'd never felt so free.

We dropped anchor not too far out, and Tamal got us both a mask, snorkel, and flippers. He helped me on with them and explained the snorkel after my dubious side-eyeing of it. Yeah, snorkel newbie here. I followed him into the sea and once I relaxed it was amazing. With my head below the water the sea blocked out most of the noise, so everything sounded muted, and the view was spectacular. And I didn't mean just Tamal half-naked. Fish of all different beautiful colours and so vibrant – dark blues and vivid orange – and the coral was like nothing I'd ever seen before.

We floated together and swayed closer and closer with the gentle swell of the sea until our fingers brushed and Tamal linked our hands together. A huge white fish swam nearby, and I pointed at it, but when I turned to look at Tamal he was watching me, not the fish. I almost gasped when he pulled his snorkel out but remembered I'd lose mine. He tugged us closer together and gazed steadily at me as he reached for my snorkel and replaced it with his mouth. Enclosed under the sea, fused together like we were one, and no one else existed.

My hands closed around his biceps as I started to panic, needing a breath, but Tamal wrapped his arms around us and broke the surface. I laughed as we parted and sucked in a lungful of air before I splashed him. Tamal slunk up beside me and slid his arm around my neck as he tried to dunk me. Until I sank my teeth into his arm, then sucked, and worked my way back up to his lips. I wrapped my legs around his waist and sucked on his tongue to the rhythm of the waves as he held me tight. God, I never wanted the day to end.
